GPU vs. CPU Upgrade: Extensive Tests "Geforce 6 and 7 cards are hardly suitable for current games and modern LCD resolutions—the higher graphics settings in the test show that the older graphics chips really have reached their limits. This is obvious, at the very latest, when you try to combine a Geforce 6800 GT with a more powerful CPU, which does not achieve any palpable increase in 3D performance. However, games are not 100% dependent on the graphics card; the Geforce 8 and 9 require a basic level of power, otherwise they are unable to exploit their 3D potential. The speed of the CPU should lie somewhere between 2600 and 3000 MHz; any lower, and the new graphic…

  4. For me... WoW killer. (so far) I have to say that the quests are sooooo much better than in WoW. The interactive sequences of what the quests are all about are pretty darn cool for a number of reasons. Graphics, voice overs, choose your own path, etc... The combat system just makes me want to get out there and fight everything that walks and the combo's are just fun as all hell. The timing of your strikes are real time combat, not like the basic combat system of WoW where it's basicly a PVE combat system that they try to use for PVP. AoC is using a PVP combat system that works great for it all. For example, I got jumped by the NPCs during a quest and one was som…

So, I've been running on some of PurSuiT's old gear for quite some time now (so-so 939 mobo with an Athalon X2 4400+, 2GB DDR400, 7950GT video), and I figured it's about time I upgrade. Now, I'm trying to keep the price around 500, since I really don't have much to spend. Here's what I've got for my new setup... Motherboard - ASUS M2R32-MVP CPU - Athalon 64 X2 4600+ Cooler - ZEROtherm BTF90 RAM - 4GB WINTEC AMPX (DDR2 800 Video - Radeon HD 3870 512MB GDDR3 Definitely not top-of-the-line gear, but it's better than what I've got right now, and it's got plenty of room for upgrades in the future...

  7. Creative launches USB X-Fi "The USB sound card supports X-Fi Crystalizer, various CMSS-3D modes and EAX HD, which makes this a pretty high-end solution even compared to some of the cheaper PCI cards. As the product name suggests, there's support for 5.1-channel and this comes via three 3.5mm audio jacks. Furthermore, it has a 3.5mm jack for line-in and one for microphone input, as well as two RCA jacks for stereo audio out and an optical S/PDIF out for connecting to an external amplifier etc. At US$59.99 it's more affordable than the X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook for those looking at upgrading their notebook audio and it offers some additional features, but it's …

  10. Japanese Internet Satellite Hits 1.2Gbps "The tests were carried out on May 2 as part of verification of the Kizuna satellite. In the tests data was transmitted on two 622M-bps channels both up to the satellite and down to a receiving antenna. Together the combined data transmission speed was 1.2G bps. Tests carried out in March and April verified uplink communications at 1.5M bps and downlink at 155M bps using a compact 45-centimeter antenna and both up and downstream at 155M bps using a larger 1.2-meter dish. At the time JAXA said the 155M-bps downlink was the fastest in the world achieved with such a small-size antenna."

  14. ASUS Creates Upgradeable Graphics Cards "The vision of upgradeable graphic cards goes back to the late 1990s, when Micron Technology was experimenting with removable sockets. In 2006, both MSI and Gigabyte showcased upgradeable graphic cards, but their concepts, which were based on GeForce Go MXM boards, never took off. Earlier this year, Asus introduced a single board with three MXM slots for ATI Mobility Radeon 3850 or 3870 cards (upgradeable with future parts), and has now unveiled its single-MXM product."
