CPU-boundedness of the video system Part I - Analysis "To start with, we produce results in the game HALF-Life2 at 1024õ768 in the «maximum details» mode but with the antialiasing and anisotropic filtering disabled. There is contradiction here. The «maximum details» settings are in charge of the image quality, and the disabled AA/AF allow producing FPS values which do "rest against" the CPU performance. We depict the produced results on the graph, with the X axis denoting the CPU clock speed and the Y axis reflecting the produced values of the video card performance in FPS."

Power Color X1800 GTO: Cable-free Crossfire Explored "Power Color has sent us their X1800 GTO card which is specced identically to the Sapphire version, albeit with a different cooler. To add some meat to this article however, we will be testing both cards in Crossfire in a number of configurations to see how ATI's recently implemented cable-less Crossfire support fares."

How Many Miles per Gallon Does Your CPU Get? "Sure, you could hold a thermometer to your CPU and run a billion calculations and divide one by the other, but AMD and Intel are going to start advertising these numbers, so they're going to have to figure out some industry standards."

Creative spills the beans on X-Fi faults "Apparently, all of those that exhibited the symptoms were high-spec gaming systems. Isolating them has taken a bit of time mostly because although they all seemed be based on NForce4 chipsets, they didn’t have much else in common."

2GB of RAM: Do We Really Need That Much? "...1GB memory modules used to be pretty rare and cost quite a bit of money until recently. However, the situation has changed lately, as the memory chips needed for 1GB memory modules production became wider available. As a result, there appeared some pretty fast overclocker’s DDR SDRAM modules with 1GB capacity in the market. Unfortunately, they cannot boast the same characteristics as 512MB solutions most popular among computer enthusiasts. Of course, you can equip your system with 2GB of memory by installing 4 x512MB modules. However, this solution will always work slower than a system equipped with a pair of 1GB memory DIM…

The Latest DVD Writers' True Speeds "So while the quick arrival of dual-layer writers has helped keep both -R/RW and +R/RW stay in the race, the + standard still has a lead. The + standard's writing performance also proved to be better, as you'll see later in our test results. With this in mind, we tested the writers with media that are actually available for sale to make sure our tests reflect actual conditions on the street today."

I have a couple of sticks of 512 Ultra PC3200 DDR and I figured for $3 I'd get the heatspreaders when I bought the ram. The conflict I'm seeing here is that the ram has a sticker over the chips that says warranty void if removed. I'm pretty sure to have the best thermal efficiency and adhesion of the contact pad of the heat spreader, that direct chip contact is needed. What has everyone else done? Go over the stickers, or rip the suckers off and not worry about the warranty? I have a call in to Ultra too to find out what their official stance is.
