  3. nVidia Graphic Drivers to go Multithreaded "Most imminent on the horizon right now is ForceWare release 75, which will bring a number of improvements for SLI performance and 64-bit Windows, among other things, but release 75 will not be multithreaded. The next major iteration of the driver, release 80, is slated to bring support for multiple threads. We may not see this version for a few months; NVIDIA hasn't given an exact timetable for the completion of release 80."

Interview: ATI and the Xbox 360 I began by asking Richard for his opinion on the Xbox 360 archtecture. “I’m really impressed,” he commented, “It’s way better than I would have expected at this point in the history of 3D graphics. The unified shader architecture alone is capable of giving a performance increase of a factor of nearly two over the hardware that we have in PCs today. That’s because we see many cases, and this is particularly true on consoles, where games are limited by one of the two groups of engines in the graphics chip, either the vertex engines or the pixel engines. With a unified pipeline we can now devote 100% of the hardware to which ever task is t…

Down the Road to Unreal Tournament 2007 "You can see for yourself what that means. We could quote poly counts and tech specs all day, but the simple fact is it looks amazing. In two years time such mind-boggling imagery may well be the norm, but right now every UE3 game we see - Gears Of War, UT2007 - we get a nosebleed just thinking about what's to come. Like Morris says, right now no-one else can come close. As for gameplay of course, this is UT, and it seems Epic very much wants to continue where it left off."

  9. The USB drive that meowed Nice gimmick.... I think.... Backlash Brews Over Blue LEDs "When Australian applications consultant Martin Pot bought an LCD monitor last December, he got an unwanted extra: a dazzlingly bright blue LED, or light-emitting diode, just below the screen. Pot found the LED "distracting" and "annoying," and finally resorted to covering it up just to get some work done." Symantec Research Labs Creates New Worm Simulator "When a new worm spreads around the world, people want to know if they are protected. How fast is it? How does it spread? A new simulation program developed by Symantec Research Labs not only has the answers, it also…

Digital distribution: Keep the money and run? Valve has since split with Vivendi in a highly publicized trademark infringement lawsuit. But, prior to the settlement, Vivendi announced in January -- two months after the game's release -- that it had sold 1.7 million units of "Half-Life 2" in stores. Valve won't talk about how many units it's sold through Steam, but Lombardi describes the venture as being "extremely successful. Even though the lion's share of our sales is still at retail, the digital units are wildly more profitable for us."
