AMD Shows off Three new Sockets at Spring IDF 2006 "On the server side, AMD had a working demo of their new Socket-F (1207-pin) Opteron products. Just like Socket-AM2 and S1, the Socket-F platform supports a dual channel DDR2 memory interface. The greater number of pins will be useful in accommodating the power needs of quad core Opteron products due out in 2007. With the dramatic increase in pins over the previous Opteron socket, AMD had to move to a LGA interface similar to what Intel uses in all of their desktop CPU sockets." AM2 Motherboards "All of the Tier 1 players will be showing at least one AM2 board, and some will have several on display, but not …

New Intel quad-core chips are really double duo-cores "The move isn't a major surprise: It's the same approach the chipmaker took a generation earlier when introducing its first dual-core processors. But it does indicate the urgency Intel feels to get products--due to arrive in 2007--to market to stay competitive with Advanced Micro Devices."

ATI and Nvidia's Same-Day Mega-Launch Mayhem "Both high-end cards have rich feature sets and can support multi-GPUs. The answer comes in the form of if you like hardware acceleration of FP16, SLI, Pure Video or another Nvidia-centric feature, then choose Nvidia. Do you like HDR with AA, CrossFire, or another ATI-centric feature? Then choose the ATI solution." NVIDIA's Tiny 90nm G71 and G73: GeForce 7900 and 7600 Debut NVIDIA GeForce 7900 Series Preview Do understand that the reason NVIDIA leaves these harsh filtering optimizations on is two-fold. First, on smaller displays, it simply does not make a difference to the vast majority of gamers out there. Seco…

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-6085568.html IBM and Georgia Tech have coaxed a chip to run at 500GHz, a record for a silicon-based device, by dropping the temperature to minus 451 degrees Fahrenheit. The experiment is part of a project to explore the ultimate speed limits of silicon-germanium (SiGe) chips. SiGe chips are similar to standard silicon chips, but they also contain germanium for better performance and lower power consumption. Adding germanium, however, increases the price of producing wafers and chips that come out of the wafers, so SiGe chips are typically only found in a few select markets. IBM has sold hundreds of millions of SiGe chips si…

Saitek Eclipse keyboard - $35 @ Radioshack I like the fact that the light shines throught the keys as well as around, and I can change the level of illumination. The keys depress like butter. 9.2/10 Flexiglow Cyber Snipa gamepad - $28 @ Xoxide This thing blows so far. I've only had it 4 days, but the keys have to be depressed in the middle, otherwise they stick. The SPACE key is in a perfect position, but if you dont push right on the lettering, it doesnt work. Ill give it another week or so, then Ill ebay it. 3.6/10 I would write a review, but it would be too negative.

ATI's X1950 XTX set to pump up the pixels ATI new X1650 PRO to launch in August Is Ageia's PhysX Failing? "Recently we have been getting more glimpses at GPU-accelerated physics, and it raises doubts about Ageia in both the long and short run. Both Nvidia and ATI have been working with Havok, a company which you might have heard of. Havok has been developing and implementing game development tools and engines; its product list includes gameplay physics engines with multi-core and multi-thread support. Now it also has an effects physics engine called Havok FX, which is being used by ATI and Nvidia for their effects physics hardware acceleration."
