AMD Shows off Three new Sockets at Spring IDF 2006

"On the server side, AMD had a working demo of their new Socket-F (1207-pin) Opteron products. Just like Socket-AM2 and S1, the Socket-F platform supports a dual channel DDR2 memory interface. The greater number of pins will be useful in accommodating the power needs of quad core Opteron products due out in 2007. With the dramatic increase in pins over the previous Opteron socket, AMD had to move to a LGA interface similar to what Intel uses in all of their desktop CPU sockets."

AM2 Motherboards

"All of the Tier 1 players will be showing at least one AM2 board, and some will have several on display, but not running."

First Look: AM2 DDR2 vs. 939 DDR Performance

"This is our first opportunity to look more closely at an AM2 DDR2 controller that might answer these questions about memory performance, since it is the first AM2 design to outperform Socket 939. Earlier AM2 spins could not match 939 memory performance, but they continued to improve. This is remarkable when you consider that new Intel processors pretty much have performed like final shipping processors some 5 months ahead of launch. AMD, on the other hand, has done most of their development work on the DDR2 memory controller in the last 3 months with just 6 weeks remaining before launch."

ASUS M2N32 Spy Pics

"We managed to acquire some pics of ASUS' upcoming AM2 motherboard based on nVidia's dual x16 chipset.

This is a two chip solution and ASUS uses a heatpipe for a noise-free solution. Besides the six SATA ports supported by the chipset, an additional two are used with one on the backplate. Lastly, interesting looking mic bundled inside the box and the pic with the features on the inside flap of the packaging shows some info on it."
