It seems as though M$ has no intentions to keep their predecessor around and make it a bargain console like Sony did with the PS1. But then again, they never said they were going to."

  3. Sources close to Microsoft's senior Xbox executives have confirmed that the company does not intend to make its next-generation console, which is set to be launched by late 2005, backwards compatible with existing Xbox software. Speculation about the backwards compatibility functionality has been rife since it emerged that Xbox 2 - codenamed Xenon - will have radically different hardware to the original system, with a non-x86 processor, no hard drive and an ATI, rather than NVIDIA, graphics chipset, all of which would make running Xbox titles on the platform very difficult. It was widely believed, however, that Microsoft had retained a team of hardware emulation …

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1263 It looks like it will be the same as the original xbox, those who want to use live need not apply. And as much as live is tied into the 360 you probably wouldn't be able to hook it up to your network unless you blocked it from getting out to the internet.

Xbox 360 gets big update with 2GB cloud storage http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/xbox-360-gets-big-update-with-2gb-cloud-storage-and-other-new-features/ The Xbox 360 has received a pretty big update that adds a host of new features, led by a bump to 2GB of cloud storage for your game saves. Previously the 360 offered 512MB of cloud space, but now gamers are getting a lot more room for those occasions when they switch between consoles or visit a friend.
