DX10 for the Masses: NVIDIA 8600 and 8500 Series Launch While the performance of the 8800 GTX is still a ways off from making it to the mainstream, we finally have the feature set (and then some) of the GeForce 8 series in a very affordable package. While we only have the fastest of the new parts from NVIDIA today, the announcement today includes these new additions to the lineup: GeForce 8600 GTS GeForce 8600 GT GeForce 8500 GT GeForce 8400 (OEM only) GeForce 8300 (OEM only) GeForce 8600: DirectX 10 For The Masses "The answer to my first question is yes. This new offering delivers upgrades to the previous card. Other than the die shrink to an 80 n…

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2 Review - Tom's Hardware.com "Having said this, we do not recommend buying a GeForce 9800 GX2 for those who rarely change graphic cards and want to invest in a very high end card and keep it for a long time. There are times when a card like this should excel, like in higher resolution and with demanding settings, but the 9800 GX2 is barely better than a simple GeForce 8800 Ultra. The blame, just like on the 3870 X2, is on the amount of memory being limited to only 512 MB, a quantity incompatible with the very high resolutions and even more with antialiasing. Numbers speak for themselves, when the 9800 GX2 out performs the 8800 Ultra (with 768 MB…

I have a couple of sticks of 512 Ultra PC3200 DDR and I figured for $3 I'd get the heatspreaders when I bought the ram. The conflict I'm seeing here is that the ram has a sticker over the chips that says warranty void if removed. I'm pretty sure to have the best thermal efficiency and adhesion of the contact pad of the heat spreader, that direct chip contact is needed. What has everyone else done? Go over the stickers, or rip the suckers off and not worry about the warranty? I have a call in to Ultra too to find out what their official stance is.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced on Sunday that it plans to spend $24.6 billion over the next five years to increase the nation's Internet broadband infrastructure to support country-wide 1 Gbps Internet access, and wireless services of 10 Mbps. KCC is also projecting Digital TV coverage will increase to 96% by 2012, up from the current 87%, and will allow at-home TV viewing of I-Max films. The typical U.S. cable subscriber receives less than 16 Mbps broadband Internet today. The highest-end offerings by Comcast and Charter Communications are 50 Mbps and 60 Mbps, respectively.

Gigabit cellular networks could happen with 24GHz spectrum. "A Notice of Inquiry issued unanimously by the commission on Friday identifies frequencies of 24GHz and above as being able to provide gigabit or even 10Gbps speed. This would be a major change because today’s cellular networks use frequencies from 600MHz to 3GHz, with so-called “beachfront spectrum” under 1GHz being the most desirable because it can be used to deliver data over long distances. AT&T and Verizon Wireless control the most beachfront spectrum. The FCC’s notice talks about frequencies as high as 90GHz. A new Wi-Fi standard that uses 60GHz can deliver up to 7Gbps" http://arstechnica.com/in…

How to build a gingerbread computer "Christmas is just round the corner. For some it is a chance to relax with friends and relatives and retreat from the every day hectic work pace. A common family tradition is Christmas baking and most of us have probably taken part in it at least once, with a more or less successful result. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the whole Christmas baking thing, but since my girlfriend loves it I usually end up doing it anyway."
