Catalyst™ 7.10 claimed a lot of performance enhancements: ATI Catalyst 7.10 Analysis - XP & Vista "Performance is the name of the game this month, performance increases are what AMD have promised with Catalyst 7.10. Labeled as the “Shoot em’ Up Driver” we have a huge line up of improvements. Unfortunately while we don’t test all of the programs there are a number that we do. You want to read this as much as I want to write it so let’s not ramble on and just get straight into it."

Ubuntu 7.10 Released. Ubuntu's New 'Gutsy Gibbon' Brings Linux Out of the Jungle http://www.ubuntu.com/ to download... "Gutsy Gibbon is certainly easier to install and set up than Windows Vista, and it's very close to matching Mac OS X when it comes to making things "just work" out of the box. Wi-Fi, printing, my digital camera and even my iPod all worked immediately after installation -- no drivers or other software required." "When it comes to finding and installing applications, the Add/Remove Programs feature in Ubuntu surpasses both Windows and Mac OS X. Whereas Windows and Mac users usually need to comb the web for popular applications for their newl…

Megatexture in Quake Wars "Many other non-graphics foundations were also changed. The built-in "boxes and ragdolls" physics engine was significantly improved especially to make it more network friendly. The networking code was also changed to reduce the amount of information being passed around, with Area of Relevance being the biggest change. In this system the engine will break networking traffic in a Level of Detail fashion not too different from what graphics cards do, with fall back positions of varying network fidelity as entities get farther away or occluded. The engine is also fairly threaded with many sub-systems like sound, bot A.I., MegaTexture and the rend…

The performance increase is said to make XP running Service Pack 3 faster than Windows Vista running Service Pack 1, which is not exactly good news for Microsoft. According to reports the performance boost can be as much as 10% with XP SP3 over XP SP2."

3DMark Vantage RC0 screenshots released "These “screenshots” are captured by digital camera. It seems the RC0 version of 3Dmark is not stable, because it can’t even finish the benchmark and reporting errors. source said his testbed can not finish Graphic Test 2, and all the graphic test/CPU test/feature test can not be ran one right after another or it will crash. The application still have lots to improve. Just for your information, 3Dmark Vantage is a Vista/DirectX10-only benchmark program and scheduled to be released at GDC on Wednesday the 20th of February 2008. Source said there both release note and spec did not mention DirectX10.1."

Crossfire X driver comes tomorrow Giuseppe Amato, the Director of Value Proposition team at DAAMIT EMEAI, has just confirmed that Crossfire X, or Catalyst 8.3, will launch tomorrow. This new driver will feature Hybrid graphics at the same time. The driver will support 44X AntiAlising mode and two cards should actually end up much faster than a single one. We don’t know how it scales but we will tell you after CeBIT. Triple and quad GPU are possible, and you can mix and match ATI's Radeon HD 3800 series. PowerPlay will be the part of that driver. Well, it comes tomorrow, and we will know much more soon.

Message to Daniel_K Daniel_K: We are aware that you have been assisting owners of our Creative sound cards for some time now, by providing unofficial driver packages for Vista that deliver more of the original functionality that was found in the equivalent XP packages for those sound cards. In principle we don't have a problem with you helping users in this way, so long as they understand that any driver packages you supply are not supported by Creative. Where we do have a problem is when technology and IP owned by Creative or other companies that Creative has licensed from, are made to run on other products for which they are not intended. We took action to re…
