ATI Crossfire at Beyond3D ATI's X8xx CrossFire Graphics Arrive at Anandtech "The Crossfire system in its current implementation does have a number of positive points though. For one, when the system was fully set up its stability seemed to be very good, with no issues under Windows and very good compatibility, without any rendering issues, on all the applications tested here - even the smaller test applications worked flawlessly. The software and control side seemed to be fairly good, with the Crossfire just being enabled in Catalyst Control Centre without needing a reboot for like-for-like board configurations and the Super AA mode already integrated into the FSAA s…

X-Fi and the Elite Pro: SoundBlaster's Return to Greatness "The only thing that we would really like to see that we don't is Dolby Digital Live (realtime Dolby 5.1 encoding for output over SPDIF to a receiver). With all the processing power available, there is no excuse for not supporting this feature, yet we have seen no mention of it from Creative. Dolby Digital Live may not be as hot a topic as it was back when NVIDIA supported the feature in their onboard SoundStorm audio solution, but we would still like to see it added for completeness (especially when even Intel's onboard solution can handle it)."

  5. nForce 4 SLI X16: Full Speed PCI Express "Ever since its launch in the fall of last year, nForce 4 has brought us SLI capability. Configurations for PCI Express slots in nForce 4 SLI motherboards must be selected by using a paddle that can be flipped to allow for either 2 x8 connections or full bandwidth for one with the other disabled. There is added flexibility on an nForce 4 SLI motherboard, but this flexibility comes with some limitations. Today, NVIDIA sheds the shackles of the paddle selector and limited bandwidth with the new nForce 4 SLI X16 chipset."

ATI R520 "We have confirmed the 24 pipelines rumors from several independant sources. However, these 24 pipelines are not comparable to 24 of today's pipelines - multiply by 1.3. So the 24 pipelines will have the performance of 32 "normal" pipelines. The result of this is that the R520 will be two times as fast as the currently fastest X850s." Yeah, its rumor-mill stuff.... but most here will be drooling over the next flagship products from both houses!

  11. "Much like Intel’s Centrino, AMD is referring to their Turion 64 as a “Mobile Technology” and not just a microprocessor platform. AMD has seen the success of Intel’s Centrino Mobile Technology and is hoping to capitalize on some of that success. Unlike Centrino however, Turion 64 doesn’t rely on AMD-supplied chips to receive the branding. AMD will provide the Turion 64 processors, but chipsets can be provided by a number of vendors as can the LAN and wireless controllers. AMD is far less restricting on the components that make up Turion 64 enabled notebooks, which means that they will inevitably be cheaper than Centrino platforms, but it also means that they may not b…

  13. Tensilica’s Xtensa LX Processor Licensed by NVIDIA “For the application areas we are targeting, the extensibility and performance of Tensilica’s Xtensa LX microprocessor were key factors in our license decision,” stated Chris Malachowsky, Co-Founder and Vice President of Hardware Engineering, NVIDIA. “We were very impressed with Tensilica’s automated approach for both the processor extensions and the generation of the associated software tools. We are anxious to capitalize on the improved productivity and flexibility that Tensilica’s configurable microprocessor and toolset provides us over our more traditional fixed function, hand-coded implementation techniques.”

AMD to launch dual-core Toledo to counter the Intel Smithfield "Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will take on Intel’s dual-core desktop Smithfield processor by introducing a dual-core counter version, codenamed Toledo, in the third quarter of this year, according to market sources. A number of vendors, including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Fujitsu Siemens, Sony and Gateway, have decided to incorporate the Toledo in their desktops, the sources noted. AMD is now entering the competition with both single and dual-core desktop processors, and the company will continue in 2006 with a dual-core processor codenamed Windsor, to counter Intel’s Presler, the sources noted."
