R420 Shows up at IDF

ripped from Beyond3D:

However of more interest was that it appears that ATI’s future high end part R420 made a small appearance. According to Tweakers.net, in a short part discussing the GDDR-3 graphics memory, which currently has speeds in the range of 500 - 700MHz (1 - 1.4GHz effective) ATI demonstrated a demo of the upcoming, DirectX9 heavy title, Colin McRae Rally 4 on R420, which was quoted as running at 2 - 3 time faster than present DirectX9 capable hardware. We contacted ATI to verify if this was R420 and they stated that they had demonstrated the title running on their future "Next Generation Hardware" which is as good an confirmation of this being R420 as you can get.

Also more here at X-bit labs

ATI Technologies is reported to have said that the next-generation visual processing unit shown off at IDF – the code-named R420 – is capable of running at 100fps in Colin McRae Rally 2004 game, which is 2 or 3 times faster compared to “today’s DirectX 9.0 hardware”.

The more and more I see stuff coming out about the new Ati cards, the more i want to wait and maybe get one when they come out.

Problem is I'm dragging with my gf2 and can't really play any newer games with all the good stuff. If I wait for the new cards, anything that comes out between now and then I have to wait to play. I'm still waiting to get a new card so I can play KOTOR again on since I found out how much detail I'm really missing. :P

Yeah, with the 9700 PRO going for just under $200, and the 128Meg 9800 PRO going for like $220... it can't hurt to wait a little longer.... Might even be sooner than we think:

ATI R420 A12 silicon ready - shock

"A12 is the stepping of silicon that means that the chip is ready for production and we are told that cards could be available much closer then planned, just depending on the marketing department saying yes."

I'll give ya a Hell Ya!!! Errr, I mean, YES! :P
