http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-6085568.html IBM and Georgia Tech have coaxed a chip to run at 500GHz, a record for a silicon-based device, by dropping the temperature to minus 451 degrees Fahrenheit. The experiment is part of a project to explore the ultimate speed limits of silicon-germanium (SiGe) chips. SiGe chips are similar to standard silicon chips, but they also contain germanium for better performance and lower power consumption. Adding germanium, however, increases the price of producing wafers and chips that come out of the wafers, so SiGe chips are typically only found in a few select markets. IBM has sold hundreds of millions of SiGe chips si…

Microsoft to end 64-bit Windows endurance test in one month "After years of delays, Microsoft will deliver a pair of 64-bit operating systems within the next month. Honest. Jim Allchin, Microsoft's SVP of platforms, promised to ship the Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating systems "in about a month." These operating systems - one for servers and one for workstations - will work with x86-64-bit chips from both AMD and Intel. They should help Microsoft catch up with Unix and Linux OS makers that already have 64-bit OSes available."

Intel to put 64 bits in desktops in 2005 "Intel once said desktop buyers wouldn't really need 64-bit capabilities until toward the end of the decade, but the company will make such capabilities a feature across its desktop lines next year. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker disclosed at its analyst meeting in New York that it will include 64-bit functionality on its desktop chips starting in 2005, a schedule that roughly coincides with the release of a 64-bit version of Windows for desktops coming next year. The functionality will appear even in the budget Celeron line."

GeForce 680i Motherboards Snub Quad Core Yorkfield "So it seems that the 680i chipset has support for the quad core Yorkfiled (and dual core Wolfdale), but it seems that the 680i motherboards have been built in such a way that quad core Yorkfiled (and dual core Wolfdale) will not work on almost all 680i motherboards produced. So all in all, 45nm Intel CPUs are not a mix with the current 680i. NVIDIA stresses that we look forward to the next-gen chipset for support, which of course requires buying a new motherboard. All of this begs the question, at least in my mind, “Did NVIDIA know this was coming?” Obviously if it did know this was coming back during reference …

NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX Lockup Issue Resolved "The only thing that seemed to work though was lowering the clocks back down the reference speeds NVIDIA announced of 650 MHz core, 800 MHz memory and 700 MHz vertex clock. Yes, in this case, the vertex shaders are running slightly faster than the majority of the GPU, the pixel shaders. Turns out that overclocking was one of the main instigators of this problem."

Nvidia to launch 90nm GeForce 7900 GPUs on March 9 "Nvidia is expected to launch its 90nm GeForce 7900 graphics processor unit (GPU), in GT and GTX versions, on March 9, according to sources at Taiwan graphics-card makers. In addition to the GeForce 7900 series, Nvidia plans to add the GeForce 7600 (codenamed G73) by the end of next month, the sources indicated."
