Well this 3870x2 1gb by ASUS came out costing $475.... and I got it for $189. I can't justify $550 on a 4870x2 when it isn't that much better than one for $189. Plus this ASUS card has 4 DVI outputs.

Yeah cost is something to look at, would think the 4870x2 will be released at $420 to $450 though, still a big jump from $189. Trust me I have not seen a reason to move up from my 2900XT, as it plays everything out on the highest settings still and was the last ATi card to have 512bit bus. If I remeber you are moving up from a (2) x1950Pro 256Mb cards, just going to 512Mb is a big leap. As far as 1GB that is all marketing, same with saying the x2's have 512bit bus, that is like saying if you had (2) 3870x2's you have 2GB of video memory and 1024Bit bus, there is still only 512Mb of usable memory and 256bit bus per GPU, each GPUs memory and bus can not be combined no matter how hard you may try. A single 4870 beats a 3870 x2 hands down do to the fact that they used a PCIExpress 1.0 bridge chip and GDDR3 on the 3870x2. :( Unless of course you were a lucky one that got a GDDR4 card, but those were only released for a short time in the beginning. This will be the same for the 4870x2, only a few of the first batches will have GDDR5.

The 3870x2 is 4% slower overall and I doubt this was benched against the ASUS which is overclocked.

 

ASUS 3870x2 is PCI Express 2.0 x16 825mhz 640 (320x2) stream processing units memory clock 1800mhz 1gb (512mbx2) interface 512bit (256bitx2) GDDR3. max rez 2560x1600, 4 dvi outs, tv-out hdtv/s-video out.

 

It's a beast.

 

I currently am using only 1 x1950pro 512meg. I had 3 different x1950pros and that's where your confusion is. One was 256meg and the other 2 were 512meg. I sold 2 of them as I was only having crossfire issues with them and I was able to overclock my current x1950pro 512meg fairly well.

 

The current expected price for the 4870x2 is $550 which is just way out there for me because come January you'll be able to buy it on open box for $189 just as I got this ASUS card which came out in February and had a price of $475. Newegg still has the 3870x2 for sale for $439.

Do not get me wrong the 3870x2 is a nice card and the version you grabbed up is one best. I sold my two 1950Pro's on ebay for over $400 and bought the 2900XT (cost me $30 out of pocket) thinking of selling that for $150 to $200 on ebay and getting a 4870x2 now if that last 2 years and then sells for $150 to $200 when the next cards come out, costing me $200 to $300 out of pocket I will be happy. :(

Numerous site have posted this, still it is only a 1% to 2% performance hit and only at high rez's. Just kinda shitty of ATi to send out review boards with a 2.0 Bridge and then in production swap it for a cheaper 1.1 Bridge.

My Antec 1200 case came in the mail today... Dear God this thing is bad ass, big ass hell. My fav feature is the side pannel behind the mother board comes off for cable managment and already has all the cable twist ties there.

 

And how is this for customer satisfaction...

 

When I opened the box, right on top is a letter saying that the line of fans they used had a small percentage that had performance issues so they supplied all new fans in addition to the ones that came with the case!! These new fans have been tested by them as well. They said they couldn't test all the old fans because there were too many of them so they said F*ck it just give everyone an additional set of fans. lol I love Antec.
