HD-DVD confirmed dead

Company sources at Toshiba said it is mulling three main options.

Option One: Stop selling recorders and specialise in players. Option two: withdraw from the Japanese and US markets and march on Europe, where sales are stronger. Option Three: retreat completely from the next-generation DVD business.

option four... tweak their systems to create blu-ray players instead and pay sony their cut.

HD-DVD Disc's are about 2/3 cheaper to produce then Blu Ray Disc's. The only person that is going to have the cost past on to them is the consumer once Sony has the Monoply engine going. All the major movie studio's are still producing HD-DVD just not in the US anymore. So I bet Toshiba goes for Europe, Russia, South America and China markets where ppl actully care about the cost of things and just lets Sony take Japan and the US where the more it cost the better it must be.

Toshiba quits HD DVD 'format war'

"Toshiba said Tuesday it will no longer manufacture HD DVDs, effectively ending the long-running battle with the rival Blu-ray for a dominant high-definition format.

Toshiba said it made the decision to cease developing, manufacturing, and marketing HD DVDs after "recent major changes in the market." It promised to continue offering support and service for all existing Toshiba HD DVD products.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," Toshiba President and Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida said in a news release."
