Our day with BF2 #1

"For 4 BT admins/writers Thursday 7 April was all about BF2. To give us all a little teaser about how it was like, each of them has written an individual review of their experience with Battlefield 2. FighterOfFoo is the first."

Planet Combat Cutlass's Battlefield 2 Preview

"Let me start by saying that BF2 was probably the best FPS I've ever played, and it will definitely be the FPS of the year, if not the game of the year. Battlefield 2 has a different feel than the previous franchise titles. Everything just flows much better; tanks drive smoother, transitioning from vehicle to ground is seamless, even jumping in the water and swimming is less cumbersome. The game feels more intense. From what I've read a lot of people have been skeptical of the commander mode with its directed artillery, but let me be the first to say it's unbelievable! Wait until you experience your first infantry on infantry battle in the midst of a deafening arty barrage. Shells scream in and produce resounding explosions, spraying rocks and debris high into the air. Artillery is also fortunately much more effective, and if you target your attack well you can really reduce the enemy force quite substantially."

Pre-E3 2005: Battlefield 2 Hands-on

"The other big difference between the maps is the players. The US takes a part in every map in the game. Seeing as how everyone hates us more than each other at this point, it's not really too surprising. Both opposing factions (the Middle-east Coalition and the Chinese) have different weaponry to choose from, but as it is with all games of the type, weapons, vehicles, and technology are comparable even though they have different visual styles and weapon behaviors. The MEC has a much more thrown together look with technicals and a mish-mosh of weaponry. China has a mix of proprietary military technology mixed with old Soviet era tech giving it a unique feel that is also strikingly deadly."

More BF2 hands on preview goodness: BF2 preview

"As you probably know, Battlefield 2 is the first major upgrade for the Battlefield series, and it most definitely shows. This is Battlefield on a whole new level--visually. And while the core games remain the same (you run, drive, fly around in a huge virtual battlefield alongside up to 63 other players), this feels much more like the sequel than Battlefield Vietnam was. In the game, you can play as the forces of the United States, China, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition in a near-future conflict, which means that you get to play with all the hottest high-tech weapons and gadgets that are in service or on the drawing boards."
