10Gigabit over Copper (February 2004)

"The company has demonstrated the first augmented Category 6 cable in the world with the necessary characteristics to enable 10Gigabit/s Ethernet to be implemented over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) to the full 100 meteres required for structured cabling systems."

Foundry Networks interview (13 Oct 2003)

"Are you working on 40Gb Ethernet?

We're working on 10Gb Ethernet over copper - that needs to be solved first. There are two technologies, a co-ax called CX4 and 10GbBase-T. CX4 is almost here, but I'm not a big fan, because it's co-ax cable.

Every time Ethernet uses co-ax it has always been a short-lived solution. 10GbBase-T is 18 to 24 months away. It will deliver the same 10 gigabit speeds as over fibre but over copper to 100m.

As it gets rid of expensive fibre it will be cheaper because companies can use their internal infrastructure. So there's no 40Gb Ethernet standards work."

IEEE starts work on 10-Gbit Ethernet-over-copper spec (Nov 19, 2002 )

"The drive toward 10-Gbit Ethernet-over-copper was given a strong push forward last week when the IEEE formed two study groups at its meeting in Hawaii.

The groups are the first stage in an IEEE process that will eventually standardize a 10-Gbit, interrack connection over distances of up to 15 meters using an Infiniband-like connector, as well as a 10-Gbit, 100-meter connection using CAT 5 or better cabling."

SYNERGIST 10GIG Copper Cabling System

"What is required to achieve 10 Gigabit Ethernet Performance over Copper?

The IEEE has developed a draft standard (Std 802.3an, October 2004, Draft) to support 10Gb/s data rates using twisted-pair copper cabling over a 4-connector 100 meter channel on Class F or Class E-augmented copper cabling. The draft standard requires Category 6 electrical channel parameters to be extended from the current 250 MHz to 500 MHz. This draft also introduces Power Sum Alien Crosstalk requirements up to 500 MHz and calls for the use of the line-encoding scheme PAM12. While the draft standard recognizes that Category 6 cabling systems may support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over limited distances, only new augmented Category 6 copper cabling systems will be able to support 10Gb/s data rates for distances up to 100 meters."

10GBase-T brings blazing speed (09/06/04)

"An IEEE task force first met in March to begin hammering out the new 10GBase-T, or 802.3an, standard. The first draft is scheduled to be ready this year, and the group expects to finalize the standard in 2006."

Is this current?

Current, as in "Can I buy it now", or as in "Is this stuff real?"

a: Looks like summer '06 is when we will be able to get 10BGe nic cards and switches that use Cat6

B: Its as real as the Internet can be. Although it looks like SYNERGIST is starting to sell this stuff already!!
