  1. ...

From a tech question side - aside from controlling ports and access is there a performance reason to work with a "managed" switch, vs. the unmanaged ?

All that you will, well might actually, get with a managed switch (other than the possibility of a faster backplane) when compared to an unmanaged switch would be features that during a LAN party or most home networks would never be needed/used; VLANs, QoS, etc...

This is not to say that I know someone who is running a Cisco 5000 series switch in their apartment with multiple VLANs, VMPS, etc.... But that setup is far from ordinary.

Cliff notes: If the backplanes are the same then you will not see any performance increase.

  2. Wish list for the PC is getting smaller now. Only have left for this year:

    - Total of 8GB of RAM

    - 26" or larger (1920 x 1200) Monitor

    - Possible vid card upgrade

    :)

What are ya gonna do with 8Gb of RAM??

Just got a 24" monitor (sounds of tim allen!)

I was thinking the same thing. You'd need a 64bit OS to take advantage of anything over 3-3.5 GB of physical RAM. 32 bit OS'es can only address 4 GB total... that includes video card memory.

SSD HD's would really show their stuff in a desktop. They suck too much power in a laptop (currently), but in a desktop that would not be an issue.

Wonder what a 15K U320 SCSI or 15K SAS drive would pull on that test....

  3. thanks for the picture PurSuiT. I guess it really depends on how much space and the shape that determines how everything is setup... Normally we have either done the same ally configuration that is in the picture, or done a square w/ the cables in the center.

CRT's have been good monitors over the years.... And they usually have a great death throw.... Not to mention that LCD's have come a long way in the last 8 years or so; and you can get a decent one for a reasonable price.

  4. Hi everyone, I've lurked and posted a little around here but never have made it to one of the LPE's (I no longer actually live in WNY) but was wondering how you guys have the tables setup for your parties? Some friends of mine and I do our own parties but we always fail to have a good table setup to keep the cords out of danger and provide enough room for everyone.

  5. ok, I just pre-ordered and WTF I should have read this first....

"Note: Multiplayer is not available in all countries, please visit www.gamesforwindows.com/live/countries for details. There is no LAN ( Local Area Network ) Function provided within this game. Flatout Ultimate Carnage is an online multiplayer game that utilizes the Games For Windows Live option provided by Microsoft."

"Note: Steering Wheels are not supported with Flatout Ultimate Carnage. Keyboard and controller support only."

No LAN and No wheel's so almost a waste!?!?!?!?

woah, really? wtf.... glad that I did not get it then! i'll stick with FO2

  6. we have a Wii, too bad we only have Zelda, Sports, and a few VC games. I have wanted a racing game since GT3 came out but seeing as I never bought a PS2 I will not be getting that either....

Love Sports, bowling is giving me issues due to the fact that I cannot up my score and I end up loosing my Pro status....

  7. you do get the global point for those repairs, well as long as you had used it, from what I have seen.

yeah, there are a few badges that I would have had, but I got screwed because I did not have the correct amount of playing time per kit...... Not cool, since I have tried and have not been able to get back to the kills per round! haha, just means that I need to work/try harder.

  8. Anyone getting Vista.

from what I have seen... what would be the point. There are few if any DX10 games out, and if there were not like I have a DX10 card!

Take the price of Ultimate and add ~200 and you could get a Mac Mini.

I highly doubt that I will ever legally purchase a copy of Vista, maybe if at all, an OEM version.

  9. I do like the G3, the medic guns are nice, the Spec-Op guns are ok, not sure about the supply ones, but they are better then the SAW if you are playing as the Marines, I too have not managed to take a chopper pilot with the 1st sniper rifle, and have not played with the 2nd (about 1,500 points away....). I found that going with the MP7 is ok as long as you do not try shooting someone from mid distance and beyond. I have not unlocked any of the Antitank and probably will not have the chance sine I'm sure that EA will can BF2 before I can reach 50,000 points.

  10. and I thought that my old Athlon 1.2GHz socket A was getting old!

Good reading guys. I've been pricing a new system and I was thinking about the sapphire 1950Pro card with a CF mobo, and at some point grabbing a second one, but as usual it sounds like they will be dead and cost too much by the time I could get a second one..... Hopefully the DX10 cards will drive the DX9 cards down in price quite a bit.
