  1. All that you will, well might actually, get with a managed switch (other than the possibility of a faster backplane) when compared to an unmanaged switch would be features that during a LAN party or most home networks would never be needed/used; VLANs, QoS, etc... This is not to say that I know someone who is running a Cisco 5000 series switch in their apartment with multiple VLANs, VMPS, etc.... But that setup is far from ordinary. Cliff notes: If the backplanes are the same then you will not see any performance increase.
  2. What are ya gonna do with 8Gb of RAM?? Just got a 24" monitor (sounds of tim allen!) I was thinking the same thing. You'd need a 64bit OS to take advantage of anything over 3-3.5 GB of physical RAM. 32 bit OS'es can only address 4 GB total... that includes video card memory. SSD HD's would really show their stuff in a desktop. They suck too much power in a laptop (currently), but in a desktop that would not be an issue. Wonder what a 15K U320 SCSI or 15K SAS drive would pull on that test....
  3. i wouldn't trust just anyones computers to be on my LAN either. If I were going to a LAN party w/ people that I did not know, I too would lock my system down quite well. Then again, if someone decided to start to actively 'attacking ' everyone else would be another issue entirely.
  4. GRAW (ghost recon: advanced warfighter) is like that too, but they use some unholy hacked version of gamespy. Even if you already have an account (i.e. BF2, etc...) you have to create an account through the game in order to use it in the game....
  5. that is my feelings also. Unless it is the 'public' computer that other people use... AV all the way...
  6. what browser needs to use 100MB+ of RAM? I guess FF (and the other too) are keeping their entire 'cache' in RAM instead of writing it to disk.... it would be rather easy to tell I would think... lynx anyone?
  7. thanks for the picture PurSuiT. I guess it really depends on how much space and the shape that determines how everything is setup... Normally we have either done the same ally configuration that is in the picture, or done a square w/ the cables in the center. CRT's have been good monitors over the years.... And they usually have a great death throw.... Not to mention that LCD's have come a long way in the last 8 years or so; and you can get a decent one for a reasonable price.
  8. Hi everyone, I've lurked and posted a little around here but never have made it to one of the LPE's (I no longer actually live in WNY) but was wondering how you guys have the tables setup for your parties? Some friends of mine and I do our own parties but we always fail to have a good table setup to keep the cords out of danger and provide enough room for everyone.
  9. woah, really? wtf.... glad that I did not get it then! i'll stick with FO2
  10. do you guys run AV on your gaming boxes? if so what are you using?
  11. It will hopefully not be a bad thing. How much worse games can they produce compared to EA? Hopefully the Blizzard style of game producing continues within Actizzard.
  12. At some point I would like to get one... too bad I cannot justify a PS3 and a new PC....
  13. we have a Wii, too bad we only have Zelda, Sports, and a few VC games. I have wanted a racing game since GT3 came out but seeing as I never bought a PS2 I will not be getting that either.... Love Sports, bowling is giving me issues due to the fact that I cannot up my score and I end up loosing my Pro status....
  14. nice. And I saw the 2 booster packs for $20 tonight... what a rip off.
